What are some things that make the birth control pill ineffective? I heard that certain things such as antibiotics and echinacea make the birth control pill ineffective. Is this true? What are some other things that make the pill ineffective?

uloveme192 replied: "not taking them regularly, dirnking alcohol right before or after taking them. talk to ur doctor for other."

armcoracing replied: "Antibiotics deffntly, learnt the hard way even ones for the skin, smoking apparently to, personally the coil is much safer, and its allways there so u cant 4get it, doesnt feel uncomfortable, mayby something to think about in the future, hope this helps"

happiness replied: "Yes it's true about anti biotics, the other obvious problem would be any diarrhoea or vomiting as this could remove the pill from your system."

What types of things reduce the effectiveness of birth control? I've heard that certain things (such as some herbal supplements like echinacea) can reduce the effectiveness of birth control. I've searched far and wide for answers on what other types of things can reduce its effectiveness and I can't find anything! Does anyone know of any others? Also, I have also heard that antibiotics can reduce its effectiveness-- what actually qualifies as an antiobiotic.. is it any medicine that your doctor prescribes for you? Thank you!

me replied: "Alcohol and antibiotics. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections, like a kidney or bladder infection, etc."

Will herbal supplements effect birth control pills? I take seasonique. I also take one a day energy multivitamins, vitamin D, echinacea, cranberry fruit vitamin, green tea with hoodia, and prozac. Will any of these pills effect the birth control? The pharmacy where I get my pills said they are not sure, my doctor said to talk to the pharmacy. Can anybody help?

oldtimekid2 replied: "Actually, both of them can tell you, but it's obvious that they either don't know they can or they don't want to take the time. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not.... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-) That being said, none of those supplements should have problems with each other for the general population, but I would just be guessing with the drugs. Good luck!"

KM replied: "yeah, the doctor and the pharmacy should know, or they shouldn't be prescribing, they should probably go back to school. I know herbs affect medication, so you are to take them an hour apart. Looks like everything you're taking, other than the echinacea, should be fine. I would take the echinacea either an hour before or after your prescription drugs. Herbs will make drugs ineffective."

does apple cider vinegar affect birth control pills? i have heard that echinacea can affect birth control pills.....so i was just curious if taking apple cider vinegar pills would have the same affect??

Ouroboros replied: "That's really something you should check with a doctor or pharmacist rather than relying on an opinion on here. Natural remedies can have a significant on standard remedies, for example St Johns Wort can dull the effect of antidepressants. Hope that helps :o)"

Mimi replied: "why would you be drinking apple cinder vinegar? Seriously."

Dawn M replied: "Anything acidic like vinegar, grapefruit juice, orange juice etc. can interact with many differrent medications and make them less effective. Below is a link regarding drug and food interactions w/ birth control pills. Hope it helps. "
